Kenya Beach Wedding: Planning and Destinations

Kenya Beach Wedding Planning and Destinations

Kenya’s Hideaway Attraction

Kenya is well known as the number one safari destination in the world.  A growing number of couples are finding its pristine white sands and crystal blue water to be a popular destination as well.  The beaches of Kenya are for the most part secluded and offer some gorgeous scenery to backdrop your wedding vows.  Also, having your wedding on a Kenyan beach means you wont have to to travel far to go on the honeymoon!  These idyllic beaches are a perfect exotic wedding destination and there are several popular resorts that can help you plan your dream wedding and honeymoon vacation.

Planning the Wedding

As with any venue, it’s always best to weigh the pros and cons before making a decision.  The obvious selling factor of a beach wedding is the location: it’s beautiful, exotic, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make your most special moment even better.  The convenience of having a wedding and honeymoon grouped into the same package can also save you time and money.  There is also the intimacy of a private setting: the beaches are relatively quiet and you can arrange to have a section set off for your ceremony.  If you elect to have a resort plan your event, often the extra services, including officiants, photography or videography, and food and beverage services will be included in your purchase.

Some of the downsides to a destination wedding like this include the weather, public beach laws, legal advisories, and occasional safety concerns.   If you plan on having your ceremony outside, you must be flexible.   The sun will not always want to shine, even on a beautiful beach.  There are some laws regarding the hours public beaches are open and whether or not you may consume alcoholic beverages that you should be aware of before picking a venue.  Also, be aware that per Kenyan law, if you plan to have a civil ceremony outside of a government location, you need to have the special licenses approved before doing so.  Failure to comply with the local laws may nullify your marriage.  Finally, one of the great things about beaches in Kenya can also be a potential problem.  There are, from time to time, isolated incidents of  crime and/or violence that occur on the beaches.  You should be aware of the potential risk and make your own judgement call.  Usually, when booking a complete wedding and honeymoon destination package with a reputable resort, none of these hazards will be of concern to you or your fiance.  A responsible resort will have made all the necessary arrangements, including special provisions, and secured a nice private location for the ceremony.

Some Suggestions for Beach Weddings

  • Watamu Marine Park provides a lovely setting for your beach wedding. The park is a marine preserve  with powder white beaches and the water is ideal for snorkeling and diving with an array of tropical sea life.  There is a resort here to provide you with luxury world class services, including wedding arrangements, recreational activities, gourmet food, and spa and beauty treatments.
  •  The beaches of Malindi to the north are a little more crowded with tourists, but  are just as beautiful and the surrounding areas offer a lot of things to do and see if you don’t plan to spend all of your honeymoon on the beach.  There are many shops, gourmet restaurants, and archaeological ruins to provide you with entertainment.
  • Diani Beach, south of Mombasa, is another secluded beach that will provide you with the ultimate two person getaway.  It is not completely desolate however, there are some gourmet restaurants, two shopping centers, and an airstrip in the nearby town of Ukunda.
  • Finally, the popular destination of Lamu Island is actually part of an archipelago off the coast of Kenya.  The island has a large collection of mosques and celebrates a rich history.  The beaches are a white powder and the same coral life can be found in the coastal town of Shela, which is also the hub of the island.  There are cottages on the beach that can be rented out by couples looking for a private beach wedding.
